The border is for us a method
“The border is for us a method. By this, we mean not that the border provides an abstract methodology that can be detached from its material contexts and applied generally across any number of empirical situations. We understand the method to emerge precisely from the material circumstances at hand, which, in the case of borders, are ones of tension and conflict, partition and connection, traversing and barricading, life and death.”
This programmatic declaration of Sandro Mezzadra and Brett Neilson could be claimed by many contemporary cultural and artistic research projects. These are often challenged to balance their radicant (Nicolas Bourriaud) vocation and the dynamics of territorial rooting, to cultivate practices of graft for creative contamination and the construction of a network of extraterritorial relationships with a multiplicity of international actors.
Then, we need to address borders – whether cultural, geographical, disciplinary, social or economic – in order not to make these regions the object of our representations, but to learn from them how new landscapes emerge.
It’s a matter of inhabiting the conflicts, creating spaces of proximity, translation and negotiation, highlighting unexpected connections, challenging self-defence and self-preservation impulses.
For this edition of Texture, we invited Liv. in.g., a new platform for the internationalization of cultural and creative companies, founded by 5 experts, in order to stimulate the dialogue between cultural experts. According to the themes of this edition of Altofest, we will formulate 3 key questions with Giuliana Ciancio, Cristina Cazzola and Giulio Stumpo of Liv.in.g., following the fishbowl-method.
Participants are seated in two concentric circles: the inner one is filled by 5 seats and among them one will always be kept empty from those who want to come inside the inner circle, expressing their own requests, experiences, practices and methodologies. The external one is open to host those who intend to follow and, if desired, contribute to the discussion by sitting on the empty seat in the inner one. Switching the seats between the circles will guarantee the accessibility to all the people and the continuous possibility of exchange.

Victor Segalen, in a famous text, describes a possible way of meeting as follows: “ When a European spends time in Polynesia or in China, two realities are pitted against each other without, however, canceling each other out, for both participate in the same space-time continuum: the “exote” and the exotic coproduce diversity by elaborating, through negotiation, a relational object in which neither of the two parties is effaced.”.
Which artistic practices and cultural politics may give rise to a threshold-space, in which different projects are free to negotiate with each other?
Which dialogical device do we activate by handling our international partnerships? How do we make “readable” our goals? How do we receive the cultural and identity peculiarities of our stakeholders? Which kind of difficulties and misunderstandings did we face in our past experiences?
Which kind of processes are involved in the making of spaces of cultural “resistance”? Are they artistic or productive processes? How many time and space do we need to carry out our programs? Which are the proper “arenas”, where political, cultural and artistic politics can come together?
The meeting will be held in English.
It will be provided with a simultaneous translation via chuchotage.

The Foundation of Quartieri Spagnoli (FOQUS), is presided by Rachele Furfaro and directed by Renato Quaglia. A project of urban regeneration in Quartieri Spagnoli of Naples, born in 2013. FOQUS has been a source of new employment, entrepreneurship and self-employment focused in its majority on youth and women, by forming an economically productive community of cultural and creative industries, while also being a source of new training, education, child care programs and urban services dedicated to promoting the development and social mobility. FOQUS has restored an abandoned building, the Montecalvario Institute, by turning it into a productive and creative community through the fostering of education, training and guidance for kids and youth, notably contributing to positive change in the Spanish Quarter.

Liv.in.g. is the platform for the internationalization of cultural and creative companies founded by Cristina Carlini, Cristina Cazzola, Giuliana Ciancio, Carlotta Garlanda and Giulio Stumpo.
