Created and Curated by TeatrInGestAzione
Artistic Direction – Gesualdi | Trono
Dramaturg – Loretta Mesiti

Invitation for proposals
[deadline 29th February 2020]

Altofest was born in 2011 as an act of resistance, both artistic and political. The aim is to give rise to a community that, generating critical thinking, is able to recognise every attempt of imposing depersonalized and consumerist cultural policies. A community that is able to recognize culture as a primary good, feeling its need daily. We intend to graft in the urban fabric of the city a process through which all the social elements are put into dialogue with one another. The connection is given by the foreign, external sight, which expresses itself in the plurality of artistic languages that compose Altofest. The semantic interference offers to the community the occasion of speaking to each other in a neutral language, daring together in a common space.

International artists and citizens live together for two weeks sharing time and space. So in Altofest the intimate dimension of the home is fused with the aesthetics and poetics of all artworks and artistic processes.

Applications may include one or more original work, previously created for a formal space, already completed and performed in front of an audience. All archived or repertoire works are also accepted. Projects that are still a work in progress or unpublished works are excluded. Artworks and performances must be original and any subject, contents and themes are welcomed. Proposals can be considered only if they belong to the field of Live Arts (theatre, dance, performance, experimental and interdisciplinary formats).

Professional artists can apply from all over the world, with no distinction among nationality, country of residence, language or age. Amateur groups cannot apply.

In Altofest, artists are invited to requalify their work during a residency that lasts 7 days, after which the performance is scheduled in the program of Altofest for 5 days of the public opening. The presence of the artist is required for the entire period of Altofest, 12 days.

Altofest ensures accommodation, subsistence, a lump-sum payment for the project and a weekly pass for the public transport of Naples. All the regulations to be part of Altofest follow the terms and conditions written in the following document.

To apply please send proposals by filling the online form on this link:

By filling the form, you declare to have read and accepted all the terms of the application unconditionally.

The online application is the only way to send the artistic proposals for Altofest 2020.

Altofest is conceived as a piece by its own, a theatre device, a performance in the form of a festival, which is engrafted into the socio-urban fabric in which it happens.

It is built with the participation of resident citizens, who host national and international artists in their own homes.

In Altofest contemporary live art and authors who experiment hybrid practices are welcomed. The houses become a space for artistic creation during two weeks of residence, and then they are open to the audience during the days of the festival. So the work of art breaks into everyday life, enabling the poetic part of existence to emerge. Altofest is a project of experimental sociality based on proximity, on the gift, on mutual care. This gives birth to a direct relationship between artist and resident citizen.

Altofest inaugurates a dialogue on the profound meaning of hospitality, giving rise to a process of human regeneration, blending together the intimate and public dimensions. It provides a heterogeneous dimension between artists and citizens which tends at transcending roles, in favour of choral participation, an utter experience that generates “new relationships”.

It is not just about hosting a performance in one’s own home, but the daily presence of an artist contaminates the vision of those who live or cross the same space. The creative urgency of the artist blends in with the needs of his host, in a constant dialogue that not only aims at redefining the work but also the signs that compose it, as well as the inhabited space and the objects that define it as “familiar”.

The citizen who is involved in the project is not a user or recipient, but a structural and founding part and an active agent of the process. The hosting citizen takes care of the work of art while the artist takes care of the host and his community.

The curatorial perspective that outlines the “fest” originates from meticulous attention to the one-to-one relationship between artist and donor, letting the generative potential of this encounter spread out to the system of relationships within which everyone moves; infiltrating through the different layers of living.

Altofest was born in Naples in 2011, conceived and curated by TeatrInGestAzione, directed by Gesualdi | Trono, in dialogue with Loretta Mesiti.

Altofest won the prestigious EFFE AWARD 2017-18 as one of the 6 most remarkable festivals in Europe.
For the first time in 2018 Altofest crosses the borders of Naples, inaugurating a series of special editions, commissioned by several European Capitals of Culture:

Altofest Malta 2018 for Valletta 2018 ECoC; Altofest Matera-Basilicata 2019 for Matera 2019 ECoC; while a version for Kaunas 2022 ECoC is already planned, thus creating a kind of network between the cities that share the project.

Furthermore, it is the winner of the contributions from Funder35 (2016); SIAE-Sillumina (2017); Allianz Kulturstiftung (2019).

Altofest takes place in different areas of Naples with a program that lasts 5 days from 11:00 am to 11:30 pm.

The spaces in which Altofest will take place might vary according to nature and dimension. They might be indoors or outdoors places. All of the spaces of Altofest belong to the citizens participating in the project, whether they live there or take care of them.

The program of Altofest is composed only by a selection of original works, previously created for a formal space, already completed and performed in front of an audience. Any subject and contents are accepted, but performances must belong to the field of Live Arts (theatre, dance, performances, and experimental and interdisciplinary formats).

The performances are intertwined with public talks and meetings with International Professionals, coordinated by the Co.R (Research Community). Performers are invited to participate in “Texture” – a platform for dialogue about actions and visions from different cultural artistic practices. Artists, citizens and cultural experts are all invited to equally take part in these public moments of debate in order to share and discuss the questions that are triggered by the Fest.

Co.R (Research Community)
Altofest allows moments of reflection and debate by the Research Community (Co.R) hosted by different academics and researchers that are called to interact with the various planned #CorActivities (the Journal – a printed aesthetic-theoretical guide; the Voiceover – dialogues with the artists; the Agorà, open assembly of the Altofest community)

Texture is a platform that opens the program of Altofest, inviting Professional and International Experts (culture manager, festival and theatre directors, representatives of institutions and cultural organizations) to share their practices, projects, visions.

The curatorial approach that shapes the “fest” is centred on the one-to-one relationship between artists and citizens. The generative potential of this encounter can expand to the whole system of relations in which everyone moves: infiltrating the different layers of inhabiting a place.

The performances are selected through an international open call that is spread worldwide. The dramaturgy of the fest arises from all the proposals received.

The Artistic Direction designates the space to the artist, making sure to match accurately each artist’s work with the hosting citizen and space. The match between the artist and the citizen is unique so Altofest follows a specific dramaturgy that turns it in a play itself.
In order to offer a further exchange of perspectives, the Artistic Directors and the Dramaturg of Altofest plan a meeting with each artist to analyse the work that took place during the residency.

All performances are offered for free, although booking is mandatory.
The spaces that host the performances have different dimensions and can welcome only a small number of spectators. The artists will have to perform at least two times or more in order to make sure that all the citizens involved can participate in the events.

Altofest is a space for research and a place to share artistic processes; it works as an observatory for new relations and different ways to engage citizens in participatory art practices. Therefore, artists are warmly invited to see all the performances in the program, to participate in all the activities and to work in order to engage the citizens. Also, they must be available to be working with the Co.R and to take part in discussions and debates together with the International Culture Experts.

Artists live and work in informal spaces, mainly homes, and they are hosted by citizens who are called “Space Donor”. The space of accommodation is the same one of the artistic residency and performance. If a space donor cannot host all the members of the company, then the “Accommodation Network” is activated (a network composed of citizens, friends and supporters of Altofest).
Artists are involved for a total of 12 days which include the artist residency and public performances. Therefore, the presence of the artists is required for the entire period of Altofest. The active and immersive presence of the artist is an essential part of the structure of Altofest and is necessary for the fulfilment of the processes that are triggered during the event.
Artists shall question and re-write their work, taking into consideration the elements that already exist in the space. The artist should not simply to adapt the work to space but engage in a process of translation.
During the period of residency, day by day, the artist shall engage space donors in the process of analysing and re-writing the performance.

The artistic direction provides each artist with information about the assigned space such as pictures and dimensions, but also the limits of intervention imposed by the space donor. Due to the domestic and private nature of the spaces, Altofest does not provide any further technical support other than what is already existing in the designated space.
If the artists need further technical equipment or props, they have to take care of finding and transporting them by themselves and at their own expenses.
Any technical intervention must be discussed with the owners of the space and the artistic direction.
TeatrInGestAzione shares 9 “Party Bag” (speakers, pre-amplified); a video projector; two microphones; a microphone stand; two sound mixers. The above technical equipment will be shared on a rotation basis with all the artists, only and exclusively during the public event (from the 1st to the 5th of July).

Altofest is documented through photos, videos, interviews and audio recordings. The collected materials compose the archive of Altofest which remains its property and might be used for researching and promotional purposes. The artists will have no claim and no right on the collected materials.

Altofest does not provide any technical or economic support other than what is clearly stated in this document.

Altofest is an independent community-based project. Altofest exists and resists thanks to the members of TeatrInGestAzione, who donate their time, skills and money (to the extent of their possibilities). Thanks to the citizens, who give spaces and accommodation. Thanks to the artists, who share the time and space of their own work; thanks to volunteers; thanks to the participation of some ethical local realities; thanks to researchers; professionals; cultural experts, national and international, who offer their skills and share their visions, intertwining them with those of Altofest.

From 2017 to 2019, the editions of Altofest were partially supported by Funder35/Fondazione con il Sud; SIAE-Sillumina.
The 2020 edition will be partially supported by Allianz Kulturstiftung.
